Through its three subsidiaries, Alliant Energy's utility operations serve more than 1.2 million customers in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota. Alliant Energy/Wisconsin Power and Light Co., (Alliant Energy-WPL) provides electric energy to over 385,000 customers and natural gas to 150,000 customers throughout south central Wisconsin, a service territory that spans approximately one-third of the state.
In 2001, 106 Alliant Energy locations worked the entire year without a lost time injury a 34 percent improvement over last year.
Alliant Energy-WPL has been a recipient of the Wisconsin Corporate Safety Award winner since 1996. Alliant Energy-WPL goes to extensive measures to eliminate and reduce the hazards and risks traditionally related to electric and gas operations. The company confronts potential hazards daily related to the operation and handling of high voltage electric transmission lines, operation of pressurized natural gas pipelines, operation of coal-fired and natural gas fired generating stations, and gas fired peaking units and hydroelectric plants.
The company instills safety into planning, designing and implementation of processes that affect the personal safety of its employees and the public. Alliant Energy/WPL uses injury and illness data to identify causes and trends of injuries. Last year, Alliant Energy-WPL enhanced its ergonomics program and developed an ergonomics web site providing information on how to set up computer workstations and where to go for additional help to resolve ergonomics concerns. It has also recently implemented an Automatic External Defibrillator Program at its facilities.
Alliant Energy-WPL works to educate and keep the public aware of safety issues involving potential electric and natural gas hazards. Last year, the company conducted 461 public safety presentations to over 57,600 people. The company credits the success of its safety programs to employee involvement. Over the last year, Alliant Energy-WPL achieved a 14 percent reduction in lost time injuries and its lost time severity incidence rate continues to be significantly better than industry averages. |
