Employing 223 workers, Eggers Industries-Neenah Division is a leading manufacturer of architectural wood doors, producing 3,500 doors per week. Eggers recognizes that accident prevention is an essential part of every employee's job and expects all work to be carried out in a safe manner to prevent injuries. Responsibility and authority for the action necessary to prevent accidents rests with department managers who provide constant leadership and encouragement.

Its system has been effective. The number of total injuries over the last four years declined from 46 to 13. And, in 2001, its total case incident rate was 41.5 percent less than the industry average. The company holds weekly safety audits and department safety meetings and bi-weekly safety committee meetings. All employees are encouraged to submit safety suggestions, for which they are given $10 awards and near miss reports for which they are presented $5 awards. In 2001, employees submitted 59 safety suggestions and 38 near miss reports.

All department managers, assistant department managers and selected hourly and office personnel are first aid, CPR and AED certified. Employees who go an entire year without a recordable injury receive a $75 individual safety award, and employees who participate on the Safety Committee receive $25 annually. Individual departments are encouraged to celebrate safety milestones. And each year the company holds an annual contest to compose a new safety slogan. Today the company boasts the attitude that all accidents are unavoidable and a rate of zero accidents is possible.
