AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY, TRANSPORTATION, MINING & UTILITIES > INJURY DATA: AGRICULTURE

Agricultural occupations (which includes forestry and fishing) are extremely hazardous. The variety of activities involved with the agricultural industry contributes to work-related accidents. Agricultural workers face chemical and environmental hazards; moving parts of farm equipment; dealing with livestock; driving tractors; and pulling heavy loads.

Tractor accidents cause the highest number of agricultural fatalities: 27% of the Wisconsin farm fatalities were due to tractor roll over on the operator -- 41% of these Wisconsin farm fatalities occurred in June. Many children begin working with hazardous equipment by age 10. Many of the 200+ annual deaths of children result from being a bystander or passenger on farm equipment.

Statistics for the past three years on the cause and nature of injuries and about which body parts are affected are available below. These statistics are based on claim data entered in the WC Division’s injury database for the years 1999, 2000 and 2001.
