AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY, TRANSPORTATION, MINING & UTILITIES > INJURY DATA: MINING

For the year 2000, there were 14,413 mines operating in the United States. Approximately half of these mines are sand and gravel operations, while coal mining makes up about 15% of this total. Nationally, mines employed 240,000 full-time workers. The most common injuries in mining occur from handling materials, which require lifting, pulling or pushing objects. Back injuries are the most common and account for the highest percentage of lost work days. The most severe injuries occur from falls of ground or slips and falls.

Statistics for Wisconsin for the past three years on the cause and nature of injuries and about which body parts are affected are available below. These statistics are based on claim data entered in the WC Division’s injury database for the years 1999, 2000 and 2001.
