Banta Specialty Converting (BSC) Milwaukee is a printing facility that employs 90 people and operates around the clock five days a week. The company executes is health and safety program through communication, cooperation and commitment. And because of its efforts, it has dramatically improved safety performance resulting in a no lost time accidents over the past four years. Health and safety training is conducted as part of normal operational training, which further enhances the importance of and expectation to work safely. The company considers safety in planning for new projects and equipment installations and conducts assessments of both the equipment and chemicals required to accomplish the project.

The employees at BSC-Milwaukee receive training in identifying and reporting workplace hazards. Hazard identification reports are reviewed and tracked to closure by the safety manager. In 2001, the company's emergency disaster preparedness program was updated to include a section outlining procedures for potential terrorist threats.

Maintaining an effective return-to-work policy is a team effort, and its success depends on cooperation, communication and commitment on the part of management and employees. Every effort is made to develop return-to-work solutions that will help workers remain productive and financially secure. Throughout the year, the management/employee safety team meets to discuss innovative ways to address emerging safety issues. The planning sessions involve identifying priority issues and establishing action plans. Continuous improvement and external benchmarking assure that the safety and health programs are effective and current.

BSC-Milwaukee is most proud of the overall sustained safety performance of the facility, and the individual focus of all the employees that achieve and maintain safety excellence in the workplace. BSC-Milwaukee has been a two-time recipient of the Banta Corporate Safety Award which recognizes exemplary performance and continuous improvement in health and safety.
