Category A4 - Manufacturing

Employing 1,450 employees at two plants, Procter & Gamble Paper Products Co., operates 24-hours a day, 365 days a year to produce Bounty Paper Towels, Charmin Bathroom Tissue, Puffs Facial Tissue, and Bounce Fabric Softener. Because employees work with hazardous materials and complex pieces of equipment, employees receive extensive safety training. Over the last year, the company has transitioned into a safety behavior system that is entirely owned by the hourly-paid employees. It is the responsibility of the teams to work to resolve poor safety trends and strive to keep all employees safe.

The company has 16 operating teams across its 13 departments. Each team has a minimum of two people trained as safety leaders for the work group. The work of the team members is captured on a team safety plan, which tracks progress against expectations. In addition, the company has 40 site safety system owners that receive training to become the expert resource for their system with responsibilities for the entire Green Bay location. All of its operating departments have systems in place to establish Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for all medium to high-risk tasks. All employees review the JSA's on an annual basis to ensure the safety procedures stay fresh in their minds. Everyone at the site participates in one hazard survey per year, giving the company a look at all the operating areas.

Because fire hazards are the company's highest risk, the company has a voice message alarm system, activated by a manual pull station. It also has an on-site fire brigade that is trained annually on codes and procedures. Most recently, the company has implemented biological hazards in its emergency action plans. The company honors employees for safety involvement within departments, site safety achievement, team safety plans, achieving safety goals, and anniversaries.
