Representing the largest industry base in the state, the manufacturing industry includes establishments engaged in the mechanical or chemical transformation of materials or substances into new products. These establishments are usually described as plants, factories, or mills and use power driven machines and materials handling equipment. Establishments that assemble component parts of manufactured products are also considered manufacturing.
With nearly 11,000 manufacturing establishments and over 546,000 employees throughout the state performing a myriad of manufacturing functions, the overall industry should be commended for the small but constant declines in the industry incidence rates. Naturally, some areas within the manufacturing industry have faired better than others as reflected in the industry specific industry data.
