Community Memorial Hospital is a private not-for-profit hospital serving a local population of approximately 412,000 community residents. The hospital is currently undergoing major construction projects to accommodate the increased need for patient services in the community.

The hospital's administration and staff are all committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. The hospital reflects a proactive philosophy that identifies safety hazards and utilizes multi-disciplinary teams to develop systematic controls that reduce or eliminate hazards.

Employees are encouraged to participate in the decision making process through membership on safety-related committees, workgroups and taskforces. Department meetings include safety topics and individuals are encouraged to identify safety issues and participate on safety teams.

A new focus of the hospital's health and safety program is the prevention of ergonomic injuries. The development of each new job description includes an ergonomic review of the essential job functions.

Another proactive and preventative approach the hospital employs is the safety surveillance team. This team performs monthly walk-through and safety inspections of all areas of the hospital. The team reviews department injury trends, conducts employee knowledge interviews, and environmental observational components.

The hospital investigates 100 percent of the injuries, and when a safety hazard is identified, a list of recommendations for improvements is made. The company has also coordinated a workplace violence program that includes training and awareness activities and self defense classes.
