Rib Lake Health Care Center is a skilled nursing facility that provides long-term care and short-term rehabilitation stays for Rib Lake residents. The company has extensive safety and health policies with the primary goal of providing a safe working environment for employees and a safe home for the residents entrusted to their care.
The nursing home has gone two years without a lost time accident and it credits the safety commitment from the entire staff. The company measures its safety and health progress by the calculated amount of money per patient day that is reserved for workers compensation claims. Their efforts have paid off-Rib Lake has the lowest amount per patient day of the 25 other facilities within the Wisconsin group.
Rib Lake Health Care Center staff is educated and trained in safety programs and policies, which are in accordance with state and federal regulations and OSHA requirements. Safety is always considered in planning jobs and tasks. Workplace hazards are identified by safety rounds, infection control and safety committees, and staff observations. Employees are required to immediately report incidents and accidents to their supervisors. All accidents are reviewed monthly by a safety committee and in quality assurance meetings. The information is communicated with safety alert memos to the entire staff.
Emergency and disaster preparedness includes monthly fire drills, total evacuation drills, and weather related emergency situations. Rib Lake Health Care Center staff is awarded incentive prizes for every 25 days reached without a lost time incident. In 2001, the Center awarded nearly $5,000 in prizes as a reminder to staff of its ongoing commitment to work safety.
